The switch

  • 50% CGT discount removed for individuals, trusts and partnerships. Companies never had it.2
  • Cost base indexed to CPI instead, so only the real gain is taxed.
  • 30% minimum tax for resident individuals, with a top-up if the effective rate is lower. Income support recipients are exempt.
  • Growth before this date keeps the 50% discount, whenever the asset is sold.
  • Individuals selling a qualifying new build can still choose the 50% discount.
  • ESVCLP and VCLP limits rise: bigger funds, bigger companies.7,8 Proposed

Assumptions and sources

Status as at 19 October 2026.11,2,7,9,3,5 Each date carries a status: Announced (in the Budget), Law (passed by Parliament), Draft (draft law released for consultation) or Proposed (in a bill or announcement that hasn't become law). Drafts and proposals can change before they become law, so it is worth confirming the current position with a tax adviser before relying on a date.

The 2027 CGT changes explains each change and who pays more under the new rules.
