A Tall Order

The hardest company to build is the one no one’s built before. The hardest cheque to write is the first. We named ourselves after both.

Building something from nothing is a tall order. Before the market agrees, before everyone (or anyone) wants in on the round, it’s just you and a belief no one else has backed yet.

Being first to back you is a tall order too. Before the first money’s in, before there’s anyone to follow, it’s just us and the bet we make.

So that’s what we called ourselves.

For eight years we did this as Skalata. Today we become Tall Order. Same firm, same people, now owned and run by the partners who built it.

We kept what worked.

Eight years investing at pre-seed. Two funds of top-quartile returns, held through COVID and a downturn. 85+ investments since 2019, the relationships behind every one, and the pattern recognition you only earn by going first.

We rebuilt the rest.

It took a single quarter to remake the whole investment engine around AI. We’re now a small, partner-operated team with the coverage of a firm ten times our size, and a seed fund’s judgement.

The rebuild story is a three-parter: why we paused, the engine we built, and how we use AI to do the work now.

The call itself never changed. AI manages what can be measured. It can’t touch the (only) edge left in VC: a human reading a person before the market has a say.

The machine took the science of this job. It handed back the art, and the hours to practise it.

We’re no strangers to a tear-down. We started as a not-for-profit, became an accelerator, then a seed fund, and now we’ve built it back again for the AI era. The rails under venture keep shifting, and we stay on them. What we do never changes: we go first.

We called ourselves Tall Order because what we do is hard.

But we like hard, because:

  • Hard-to-spot founders make the biggest successes.
  • Hard discipline on deploying capital makes for more reliable growth.
  • Hard-wiring AI into the firm actually changes how VC works.

This is the bet we rebuilt the whole firm to make. And we’re making it because it’s a tall order, not in spite of one.
